Ohio Excellence in Journalism Award

Maya Payne Smart Honored by The Press Club of Cleveland

Clemson, S.C.—June 22, 2007— The Press Club of Cleveland recognized Ohio’s top journalists on June 22 at its 29th Annual Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards held at LaCentre in Westlake.

Maya Payne Smart and Shannon Mortland won second place in the online general news category for Hundert Resigns, a report on Edward Hundert’s resignation as president of Case Western Reserve University.

“The Hundert resignation article co-written with Shannon Mortland is among the most memorable stories I’ve reported because I raced to the campus to get comments from students and faculty members before other media outlets got wind of the story,” Maya says. “It was a thrill to get the story first and winning an award is icing on the cake.”

Crain’s Cleveland Business: On the Web, where Maya was previously the online reporter, also received second place honors in the Best Web Site in Ohio category.

The prestigious statewide competition attracted more than 1,200 entries from newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations and websites. Each publication entered was reviewed and critiqued by a panel of experts from the following organizations:
  • Arizona Press Club
  • Connecticut Press Club
  • East Bay Press Club
  • Gwinnett Daily Post
  • Milwaukee Press Club
  • New Orleans Press Club
  • Peninsula Press Club
  • Syracuse Press Club
  • Tampa Tribune
  • Venice Gondolier Sun
