Maya Payne Smart is an Austin, Texas-based writer now specializing in book reviews and commentary. Previously she was a business reporter and with articles appearing in Black Enterprise, CNNMoney.com, ESSENCE, Fortune Small Business and numerous other publications.
Smart earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in social studies from Harvard University and a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Her honors include Style Weekly’s 40 under 40 Award and an Excellence in Journalism Award from The Press Club of Cleveland.
As a volunteer, she lends her vision, leadership and expertise to several initiatives. She has raised funds and awareness for Richmond nonprofits including YWCA Richmond, FRIENDS Association for Children, Prevent Child Abuse Virginia and James River Writers. Previously, she served on the national board of governors of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and led its entrepreneurial journalism committee.
She lives in the city with her husband Shaka, head coach of the men’s basketball team at the University of Texas, and their daughter Zora.
