Meet Maya.
Author, literacy advocate, and parent educator Maya Payne Smart is on a mission to demystify how kids learn to read, democratize access to fantastic early learning experiences, and empower all parents to raise thriving readers.
Her presentations for parents, educators, librarians, and concerned citizens deliver valuable content and practical strategies that listeners can implement right away. Maya's workshops and talks translate years of research encapsulated in her book, Reading for Our Lives: A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six (Avery/Penguin Random House), into clear, motivating messages.
Maya resides in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she is an affiliated faculty member in Educational Policy and Leadership in the College of Education at Marquette University. She holds a master’s degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and a bachelor’s in social studies from Harvard University.

What age children does this workshop apply to?
This workshop is best-suited for parents with kids aged birth to five because it emphasizes the things you’ll want to do to get kids ready for school.
I’ve already read your book, will I learn anything new?
Absolutely! This workshop has been designed to speak to the particular challenges parents face heading into 2024. I wrote the book at the height of the pandemic, and while its take on how reading develops remains sound, there’s a wealth of new research and fresh insights I’ve gathered since its publication. Maybe most valuable, the live workshop format includes Q&A time to enable real-time discussion and personalized advice that a book just can’t deliver.

I wish I’d known what I know now back when my daughter was little…
But, the journey of the past 12 years—filled with learning, research, and even writing a book on how to raise a reader—has fueled my passion to simplify this path for other parents. I’m here to make your journey swifter, smoother, and more enjoyable.
Toward that end, I’ve crafted a brand-new workshop for 2024, distilling the most powerful reading research and insights for parents. It highlights the top three things I believe every parent needs to know about their role in early literacy. I’m excited to share these strategies to help more kids gain crucial reading skills early on and to save parents considerable stress and uncertainty.
