The Wisconsin Affiliate of the Black Child Development Institute (BCDI Wisconsin) proudly announces its 2025 Annual Gala, themed “Building Literacy, Empowering Futures.”

The second annual gala will take place on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Hilton Milwaukee Downtown Hotel, bringing together community leaders, educators, and advocates in a shared commitment to closing the literacy gap for Black children in Wisconsin.

BCDI Wisconsin is honored to welcome Shaka and Maya Smart as this year’s Gala Chairs. Maya Smart, a renowned literacy advocate, educator, and author of Reading for Our Lives: A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six, has been featured on CBS Mornings, TIME, and PBS for her work in empowering caregivers and communities to foster early literacy. Shaka Smart, head coach of Marquette University’s men’s basketball team, is a dedicated leader both on and off the court, committed to uplifting communities and advancing equitable opportunities for children and families.

BCDI Wisconsin is also excited to announce that Fox 6’s Derica Williams will serve as the evening’s emcee, guiding guests through a night of celebration, inspiration, and advocacy.

“Literacy is more than a skill—it is the foundation upon which thriving communities are built,” said Tammy Saffold, BCDI Wisconsin’s Board President. “This gala is not just a celebration; it is a call to action to ensure that every child has access to the books, resources, and support they need to succeed. Literacy is one of BCDI’s eight essential elements, and we are thrilled to have the leadership of Shaka and Maya Smart as we continue this vital work.”
